Top 10 reasons to move to Brighton

Are you thinking about making the move to Brighton? We think these reasons might just convince you. Situated on the Sussex Coastline, just 50 miles south of London, Brighton is much more than a ‘just a seaside town’.

Brighton is a city for a start. Famous for vibrant culture, quintessentially English charm, and ideal proximity to London (that’s three reasons to move here already!), there’s something for everyone in this compact city that attracts a smorgasbord of characters.

Popular with commuters, students, tourists, and families alike, this melting pot of people is unlike any other city in the UK. You are pretty much guaranteed to find a place that suits you in Brighton & Hove. You just have to know where to look!

Here’s our top 10 reasons we think it’s a great idea to move to Brighton & Hove.

1 The pubs

Pub culture in Brighton & Hove is certainly well established, as is the accompanying live music scene. Brightonians love their boozers with an open fire in the winter and a beer garden in the summer, so that is how it goes. Plus, most pubs are dog friendly which tells you a little about the kind of atmosphere you can expect. Sure, there’s a bit of an art to understanding which pubs are for the students, and which are for the grown-ups and so on. But that doesn’t take long to get to grips with.

2 The foodie scene

You’ll never be short of a place to eat or drink when living in Brighton & Hove. From quaint cafes with quirky decor, to fine dining at the likes of The Ivy there is a fantastic range of restaurants. The city has a real ‘foodie scene’, and people get pretty into it. Check out @brightonfoodie on instagram if you don’t believe us!

3 Links to London

The railway links with London are incredibly convenient. At peak times it can take under 60 minutes from Brighton to London Victoria, and off-peak times this takes about 90 minutes. Breakfast on the beach, lunch in Covent Garden? Yes please.

This is a huge reason Brighton is so popular with commuters. The cost of living in Brighton is around 25-28% lower than London, but being so well connected means you can work in the capital. It’s a no brainer! A similar approach is often taken by tourists who want to visit London, but stay in less expensive seaside accommodation.

4 Career Oppourtunities

For those who don’t work in London, there is still ample opportunity in Brighton & Hove. The average salary in Brighton & Hove is approximately £495 per week which is ‘high’ compared to the rest of the UK. Brighton & Hove is also considered one of the best places to start a business. With a new business survival rate at 87%. This is the ideal location to turn passion into profit

5 LGBTQ Pride

Nowhere in the UK, maybe even the world, measures up to Brighton & Hove’s LGBTQI+ Pride! We don’t just mean the famous city wide celebration that happens every August to commemorate the stonewall riots. We’re talking about the year-round LGBTQI+ equality, dignity, visibility, and inclusivity that emanates from the Brighton & Hove community. Brighton & Hove has the highest number of same sex households in the UK and it’s estimated approximately 15% of the city identifies as Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual.

6 The South Downs

How many cities can say they are within walking distance of a National Park? The South Downs National Park starts on the edge of town, and stretches across 1627 sq-km of undulating land just North-West of Brighton & Hove. There are some truly amazing scenic routes for cycling, horse riding, and hiking, including the famous Devil’s Dyke, Ditchling Beacon and the Seven Sisters pictured below.

7 Valuable property

Living in Brighton has only become more and more appealing over recent years. This is evident in the steadily increasing house prices. As you can see, there are many compelling reasons to move to Brighton. And although there are less expensive options across the UK, Brighton & Hove has a uniquely high value thanks to the landscape, and what it has to offer.

The average house price in Brighton is £381,283 which is significantly less than London’s average of £605,437! Considering what we’ve established about the links to London, Brighton certainly trumps London when it comes to value for money!

8 Schools & Universities

Are you considering moving to Brighton with a family? You’ll be pleased to know that there are over 100 schools for all ages in Brighton. Almost all of these schools achieved an ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ report by Ofsted. You also have Brighton and Sussex University campuses dotted around the city as well as BIMM (Brighton and Irish Modern Music). The large number of university students and aspiring musicians gives Brighton & Hove a certain electric and youthful atmosphere, without the city being totally overrun with students.

9 The sunshine

The clue is in the name, Bright-town! Down on the coast, Brighton & Hove has a sunny and mild micro-climate. Brighton gets an impressive 1840 hours of sunshine a year. That’s significantly more than London’s 1610 hours especially considering the two are only 60 miles apart!

10 The atmosphere

Brighton & Hove is known for its eclectic mix of characters and unique way of life. For somewhere that shares so much of it’s foot traffic with the cosmopolitan capital, Brighton has managed to maintain it’s bohemian charm and unconventionality. A paradise for people who are prepared to lean into the alternative and think a little bit (or a lot) outside the box. The relatively compact layout of the city centre gives a sociable and familial feeling and as a result the community spirit is well-established and unfaltering.

Is moving to Brighton & Hove starting to sound seriously appealing? We thought so. Wherever you come from, whatever you’re looking for, you’re likely to find it in this remarkable city. You just need to know where to look.
