Until the 19th century, the area which now makes up Hove, was mostly agricultural with three farms dominating the parish. When nearby Brighton became fashionable in the late 18th and early 19th century, local architect Charles Busby, acquired the land, which was previously Wick Farm, for development. The name ‘Brunswick’ is thought to have been taken from the term ‘House of Brunswick,’ sometimes used for the ‘House of Hanover,’ the British royal family at the time.
Brunswick town was designed by Busby as a long row of smart, terraced houses with sea views. Brunswick square sits centrally to the terrace and provides a sanctuary of green space near the city. The houses around the square were built for the upper classes but Charles Busby also built less grand terraced housing meant as ‘second class homes’ which can be found further up from the seafront.
The majority of sales in Brunswick Square last year were of flats, selling for an average price of £523,333. The area is in high demand with young professionals looking to rent in the area due to the proximity to Brighton and good transport links. Prices range from £400,000 to over £1 million for rarely available properties on Brunswick Square*.

Brunswick is served by nearby Western Road with it’s array of shops, restaurants and pubs. Brighton city centre is only 20 minutes by foot or 10 minutes by bus, with it’s fast connections to London by train. The area also has a regular bus service to Brighton and Hove including the numbers 1A, 5, 5B, 49 and 700.
