The name Woodingdean is generally thought to have evolved from the name of a farm named ‘Woodendean’ (i.e. wooded valley). The farm which is situated in the south-end of what is now Ovingdean was owned by the comedian Max Miller in the 1930’s. Woodingdean, as it’s known today, was developed mostly after the First World War after plots of land on the South Downs were sold to property developers.
The majority of houses were built in the 1950’s and 1960’s with ample driveways and large gardens. Residents make use of the generous gardens with trampolines, swimming pools and vegetable patches. Woodingdean has a distinct ‘kidney’ shape with large private houses in the centre and many of the flats and smaller dwellings around the outside backing onto the Downs.
Property prices in the area range from £215,000 to £780,00. The majority of sales in Woodingdean last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £496,317. Woodingdean is popular with families for its proximity to the South Downs and also with first time buyers, trading city centre living for outside space and parking.
Woodingdean is well connected to Brighton by a frequent bus service which makes it popular with those working in the city. The area is also served by nearby train stations Falmer and Preston Park with direct links to London for commuters.
