Southwick: Location and History

Located 5 miles west of Brighton, Southwick is a town on the coast in the borough of Brighton and Hove. Southwick is unofficially divided horizontally into three parts; the harbour, the area between Albion Street and Old Shoreham Road and the area between Old Shoreham Road and the South Downs.

Southwick was a fishing village until the mid 19th century, which is evident by some of the architecture around the harbour. The railway station arrived in 1840, and the town grew as it became a popular holiday destination. The area between Albion Street and Old Shoreham Road is characterised by nineteenth-century to 1950s residential properties. The more recent developments of new homes lie between Old Shoreham Road and the South Downs.

Southwick property prices range from £250,000 to £1.1 million. The majority of sales last year were of semi-detached houses. Southwick is a popular choice with families looking for an area with more of a community feel but still within easy reach of Brighton city centre. Just under 10% of properties are rental homes.

Southwick feels more like a village than a town, partly due to the large green that remains central to the community. The town has a mixture of properties, including lovely flint houses in the centre, the period townhouses that line Southwick Green and smart double-fronted Victorian villas. Away from the centre you will also find a scattering purpose-built flats in quiet closes.

Southwick’s train station has direct trains to Brighton taking only 12 minutes. Alternatively, the 700 bus will take you to Brighton in 30 minutes or to Shoreham town centre in under 10 minutes. For those looking for country air, beautiful walks along the River Adur and into the South Downs are straight from the town. For travelling further afield, Gatwick Airport is 35 minutes by car or 1 hour by train.

There are three primary schools in Southwick, Glebe Primary School, Heron’s Dale School and Holmbush Primary Academy.

There is a good choice of secondary schools too. Shoreham Academy and Portslade Aldridge Community Academy are co-educational schools for children aged 11 to 19.

Shoreham College, in Shoreham by Sea, is an independent school for girls and boys ages 3 to 16.

Southwick Square is the main shopping street with a selection of high street staples and independent shops. There is a spattering of other local shops dotted around the town. Southwick has a family-orientated, community feel. There are several charming pubs and a thriving community centre that hosts a range of activities throughout the year. There is a Beer Festival every May and a flourishing local theatre.
