Mile Oak is thought to have taken its name from an Oak Tree that once stood in the area – although the original location of the tree is unknown. Before it was built on, the area was used for farming with the few inhabitants in a scattering of farm dwellings. In 1890, Brighton Corporation bought Mile Oak Farm as the site for a new waterworks and pumping station but it wasn’t until the 1930’s that the land was developed on.
Mile Oak is characterised by low-rise, low-density suburban housing typical of the 1930’s. There is a mixture of bungalows, detached and semi detached houses and a handful of low rise flats. The streets in the area are tree-lined with grass verges and many of the properties have gardens and garages.
The property market in Mile Oak has seen steady growth over the last few years. Much of the growth has been from first-time buyers, priced out of neighbouring Brighton and Hove. On average a detached house will set you back £758,336, which is up 13.2% on last year. A semi-detached house costs on average £489,400 whilst rent on a two bedroom flat will cost an average of £1,187 per month. Property prices in the area range from £240,000 to £750,000.*
