Planning permission was granted in March 2021 to build The Sea Lanes, a National Open Water Swimming Centre of Excellence. This will be the first of its kind in the UK. A 50m outdoor heated pool will be the centerpiece of this new development, accompanied by an endless pool training facility, commercial units for local health and fitness hubs, and food and drink retailers.
At present, the site is home to ‘The Sea Lanes Pop Up’ which includes SwimTrek Swim Coaching, Bison Beach Bar, Wood X Coal, Luna Wave Yoga, The Beach Box Sauna, White Cloud Coffee, and The Body Hub. This pop-up has proved very popular with the locals and has breathed new life into this section of the seafront.
The easternmost end of Madeira Drive has been somewhat the underdog of the seafront since falling into disrepair over the past decade. Built in the 1800s this section of Kemptown’s iconic promenade was closed to the public in 2012. Restoration projects have been gaining traction over the last few years with the Volks Railway Heritage Project, the ongoing petitioning for the restoration of Madeira Terraces and now, the development of The Sea Lanes.
Construction of the Sea Lanes Brighton is due to begin in January and continue through the winter with plans to open in summer 2022. As the pop-up winds down to make way for construction, we can look forward to Brighton & Hove being home to the UK’s first National Open Water Swimming Centre of Excellence.
