Sussex Square is one of Brighton’s famous Grade 1 listed squares in Kemptown. Lined with 50 Regency style, three storey houses built in 1827, it was the largest square of its kind at the time. Making up part of the Kemptown Estate, initiated by Thomas Kemp in the 1820’s, Sussex Square has access to the Kemptown Enclosures, six acres of beautifully landscaped private gardens complete with a tunnel to the esplanade on Brighton seafront. These gardens are rumoured to have inspired Lewis Caroll in his writing of Alice and Wonderland.
